The Bordeaux Bag: The Color of This Fall

The deep wine red everyone is reaching for this season, and how to wear it with what you already own.

Every fall has a color that seems to arrive before anyone announces it. This year it is the deep red of a good glass of wine: Bordeaux. It is on the runways and in the shop windows, and once you start noticing it, it is on the most quietly well-dressed woman in the room.

What sets this shade apart is how little it asks of you. A Bordeaux bag doesn't need a new wardrobe built around it. It sits beside navy, camel, grey and cream as if it had always been there, and adds the one thing they can't: warmth.

What Color Is Bordeaux?

The Bordeaux color takes its name from the wine region in southwest France and the full, dark reds it is known for. It is a red deepened with brown and plum: darker than cherry, richer than brick, and less brown than maroon, whose name comes from marron, French for chestnut.

In low light it reads almost brown; in the sun it glows red. That is the secret of its ease. It carries a little of every neutral inside it.

Why Is Bordeaux Trending Again?

Bordeaux never fully leaves. It returns in waves, usually when fashion grows tired of black. This season the runways in Paris and Milan offered deep wine tones as a warmer alternative to fall's usual black and charcoal, and fashion editors have named it the bag color of autumn 2026.

It also flatters a wide range of complexions, reflecting warmth back toward the face instead of draining it.

Bordeaux is the rare color that gets noticed without asking to be.

What Colors Go With Bordeaux?

More than you might think. Because Bordeaux carries brown and plum within it, it behaves like a neutral with a pulse.

Bordeaux with cream and black

The simplest pairing, and perhaps the most elegant. A black knit, ivory trousers, and the Capri Clutch in Bordeaux worn on its long strap. Black keeps the red serious; cream keeps it light.

Bordeaux with blush pink

Unexpected, and very pretty. Blush softens Bordeaux and makes it feel romantic, while the Capri Satchel in Bordeaux gives the pale palette an anchor.

Brown and Bordeaux

The pairing of the season. Chocolate and Bordeaux share an undertone, so together they look rich rather than busy, like the Capri Satchel in Bordeaux and in Chocolate side by side.

Bordeaux with grey, denim and navy

Charcoal grey makes Bordeaux look tailored; blue jeans make it relaxed. Navy sits in between: deep, cool and quietly sophisticated.

Bordeaux with camel and cognac

A camel coat, a cognac leather belt, a tan trench. Warm neutrals make Bordeaux look like autumn itself.

Does a Bordeaux Bag Go With Everything?

Almost. Bordeaux is at its best with neutrals and soft tones like blush and sage, and needs a lighter hand beside bright reds and oranges.

If most of your wardrobe sits in neutrals, a Bordeaux bag will work with nearly everything you own. That is its real appeal: one bag that changes how familiar clothes look.

Bordeaux Suede: Why the Color Looks Deeper Up Close

Color behaves differently on suede. Each fiber of the nap catches the light at its own angle, so one bag shows several shades at once. That is why our Bordeaux looks like wine in a glass rather than paint on a wall.

The Capri bags are made of 100% Italian suede, and each hide is carefully chosen. For more, read Suede: The Softer Side of Leather on our blog.
